'THE BOB IS MOST ICONIC HAIRCUT OF ALL TIME'

* HAIR magazine KMS California hair care survey 2007*

Press Release

The bob, as created by sixties icon Mary Quant, has won the title of most iconic haircut of all time, as voted for by 1,650 HAIR magazine readers in a survey commissioned by iconic haircare brand KMS California.

The bob beat the Mia Farrow crop, the 60s beehive, (as made popular by Amy Winehouse) Jennifer Aniston's 'Rachel' cut and the Farrah Fawcett flick. Joanna Lumley's Purdey cut (similar to a bowl cut) was the least popular.

The survey commissioned by HAIR magazine and KMS California haircare also revealed that women do believe that 'gentlemen prefer blondes' and that men are most attracted to those women with long hair. As a result, 40% of women said they'd most like to try being blonde for a day, while nearly a third thought they'd most like to try being a redhead. Over half of the women surveyed admitted to being adventurous and trying different cuts and colours.

It also seems that a bad hair day can do more than put women in a bad mood. Around a third of women questioned said that if they were having a bad hair day it would stop them from going out with their boyfriend, while another third said it would stop them going out with friends, a quarter would even take the chance of missing out on their dream job by cancelling a job interview!

cont’d/…
Proving how important their hair is 86% said they would never consider shaving it off or "doing a Britney". Grey roots showing was considered the biggest "ager" with nearly 70% saying it aged a woman more than wrinkles or varicose veins. Unwashed proved the worst hair crime (30%) followed by a comb-over (22%), greasy hair (18%) and dandruff (9%). These were followed by a very tight perm, bad roots and a bowl cut.

Jennifer Aniston was voted the celebrity whose hair women envied the most, followed by Catherine Zeta Jones, Cat Deeley, Penelope Cruz, Angelina Jolie and Natalie Imbruglia. Lindsay Lohan came in bottom.

Louise White, Editor of HAIR magazine says of the results; 'It's no surprise that our readers voted the bob as the most iconic look ever. It's a timeless classic that has been a chic style statement for more than six decades. With celebrities like Victoria Beckham giving it their seal of approval time and time again, it's a look that will always evolve to be at the forefront of fashion. Our survey also confirms what we always knew; a woman's hair is so much more than just 'hair'. Having great hair fills us with confidence, empowers us and makes us feel attractive and sexy, while bad hair can sometimes feel like the end of the world!”

Marchmont Street Shops Show The Mayor Some Front

Camden’s Mayor, Cllr Jill Fraser, has presented an award to CV Hair & Beauty for having the most beautiful shop front on Marchmont Street. The competition, run by the Marchmont Street Association (MSA), was designed to improve the appearance of Marchmont Street and to promote local shops by making them more attractive to potential customers. An independent panel of judges with expertise in architecture, heritage and conservation assessed each shop on the street for its contribution to the attractiveness of the street, its respect for the historic building it occupies and the professionalism of its presentation to potential customers.

The winner received a cheque for £50 from the MSA to donate to their chosen charity, Cancer Research UK. CV Hair & Beauty won particular praise from the judges for the way it incorporated the building’s original architectural features into the design of their shop front. Five other shops were commended by the judges, and the Mayor presented each shop with a certificate for display in their premises. Cllr Jill Fraser, Mayor of Camden, said: “I’d like to congratulate CV Hair & Beauty and all the other shops in Marchmont Street who are raising their profile and at the same time improving the appearance of the street for the benefit of traders, residents and visitors.

These small shops are an important part of their local community and they've done a great job of blending the old with the new on their shop fronts." Ricci de Freitas, Chair of the Marchmont Street Association, said: “Since the Marchmont Street Association was set up in 2004 we have been working with the council, residents’ associations and other local groups to bring the community together. These awards benefit traders, residents and visitors by helping improve the appearance of the area – and we hope it will encourage people to keep supporting their local shops.”

Camden offers support and advice to businesses in the Borough through the Camden Business Partnership. Traders in Marchmont Street and the wider King’s Cross area are eligible to join the King’s Cross Business Forum, which provides innovative opportunities for businesses to meet and learn about issues affecting the business community. Cllr Andrew Marshall, Executive Member for Community Development said: “Small businesses like these ones in Marchmont Street make a huge contribution to Camden. We are committed to helping small firms from throughout the borough access the advice and support they need through the council’s Local Business Partnership.”

They also awarded ‘special commendations’ to five other shops: Alara, “Bibas” Hair & Beauty, “Creative Gold” jewellers, “Marquis Cornwallis” pub and “Frank Harris & Associates” Estate Agents.

The judging panel included architect David Levitt of Levitt Bernstein and Edmund Bird, former Head of Conservation at Camden Council and senior heritage advisor to Transport for London.

The Camden Business Partnership works to ensure businesses receive advice to remain sustainable and profitable, giving advice and consultations. The aim of the Partnership is to bring together the council and businesses to streamline the regulation process, cut red tape and improve services.

In addition to the King’s Cross Business Forum, Camden also hosts regular business networking events through the Camden Business Partnership and the Camden Women’s Forum.
